History of our School

Provision of Education in Castleplunkett

A brief outline with key dates:
1840s: Two hedgeschools were recorded in the area.
1865: Castleplunkett N.S was established in the centre of the village.
1902: A new school building in Rusheen opened in 1903 with two teachers and 48 pupils on the roll. This is the location of the exisiting school.
1922: With 130 pupils enrolled, a third teacher was appointed, sharing a classroom with another teacher.
1929:  The school was awarded the prestigious Carlisle and Blake premium.
1936: An extra classroom was finally built to accomodate the third teacher. The name was changed from Castleplunkett N.S to Scoil Naisiunta Chiarain Naofa.
1948: Population decline led to the loss of teacher.
1959: With 100 pupils enrolled a third teacher was appointed on a temporary basis.
1960s: Electricity and school transport systems improved conditions in the school.
1994: A learning support teacher shared with five other rural schools was based in Castleplunkett N.S.
1995: Approval was given for a major school building renovation. Fundraising for 15% of the funding costs and the purchase of a sports fiels was successfully earned.
1997: The building was finished and officially opened the following year.
1998-2001: Addition educational support in the form of resource hours and the appointment of a special needs assistant was granted.
2003: Centenary celebrations: President Mary McAleese visited the school and the centenary book was published.
2018: Castleplunkett N.S now has 3 mainstream teachers and a learning support teacher shared with another school.
