Day 1
Active Schools Week officially kicked off with 'Walk a Mile with a Smile'. We were delighted to have parents joining us on this enjoyable walk around the school grounds on a beautiful morning. We were feeling energised for a fun filled action packed week.
Next up was pilates with Helen Dowling. Each room did a different pilates class. It was terrific to try something new out for the first time. We used our balance, co-ordination, strength and concentration. Helen guided us through a Spring themed sessions. We really enjoyed it.
Liz Quigley from Tulsk GAA then took us for a hurling/camogie session. The sun was shining and we had wonderful fun practising our hurling/camogie skills.
Charlene from Roscommon Sports Partnership took us for fun co-operative activities, games and dancing. She really put us through our paces. We had the best time.
Day 2
We started the day the right way with 'Walk a Mile with a Smile'. Again it was wonderful to have parents complete the mile with us.
We then held soccer and basketball tournaments for 2nd-6th classes.
The children were then put through their paces with a military style bootcamp blitz. It was a great way to work up a sweat. It was fantastic to see the older children helping and encouraging the children from the younger classes. We did 3 minutes on each of the following stations: 1.Sprints 2.Passes 3.Skipping 4. Burpees 5. Sit Up Clap 6. Leg Lifts 7. Press Ups 8. Star Jumps 9. Bean Bag Balance 10. Lay Ups 11. Hula Hooping 12. Wall Squat 13. Triceps Dips.
We finished day 2 with 'Challenge the Teachers'. The pupils played against the teachers in a very enjoyable game of basketball.
Day 3
The weather forecast for day 3 was not promised good but that did not deter us. With our dedicated visiting coaches and passionate children we braved the elements and enjoyed all the planned activities. We started day 3 with our 'Walk a Mile with a Smile' and yet again it was brilliant to have the support of parents as they joined us to walk the mile.
We were thrilled to have Declan Hynes from Roscommon Athletics club take us for a session in athletics. He showed us how runners warm up and he did fun running drills and activities with us.
Soccer is a very popular sport in Castleplunkett N.S and when the Active Flag Committee were conducting their research and planning for Active Schools Week they discovered that many pupils really wanted soccer to be included in the timetable for the week. We were very lucky to get FAI coach Adrian Carberry in to take us for soccer.
Day 4
Friday was our big finale! We invited parents in again for our final 'Walk a Mile with a Smile'. We were feeling really enthused by the end of the week.
Antoinette Gallagher from Irish Tug of War visited our school and took all the classes for a session. She showed us her impressive medals she won for Ireland. She talked us through the rules and the concept of tug of war. Then it was our turn to have a try. The teachers even got involved. It was amazing fun. We also got to keep the rope and we are really enjoying tug of war now.
